Attorney General Engages Local Authorities on Constitutional Review in Kenema District

Blama Town, Kenema District — Sunday, 18 January 2026 — The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Alpha Sesay Esq., on Sunday engaged traditional and local authorities in Kenema City, Blama Town, Small Bo Chiefdom, as part of Sierra Leone’s ongoing constitutional review process.

The engagement brought together the Town Chief of Kenema, Chief Ngombulango; the Eastern Regional Imam, Alhaji Kutubu Konneh; the Chiefdom Speaker of Small Bo, Ishmail Koroma; along with section chiefs, town chiefs, and youth leaders.

Addressing the gathering, the Attorney General emphasized the critical role traditional and local authorities play in promoting public understanding and participation in the constitutional review process.

He described the engagement as timely, noting that community leaders remain key partners in ensuring that the reform process is inclusive and rooted in local realities.“It was important to engage traditional and local authorities on the role they can play in supporting community-level participation in Sierra Leone’s constitutional review process,” Attorney General Sesay said.

He pointed out the contribution of customary and informal justice mechanisms in maintaining peace and resolving disputes at the community level, stressing that strengthening these systems is essential to improving access to justice, particularly in rural areas.

The Attorney General also noted that the engagement provided an opportunity to listen to local perspectives and exchange views on how the justice system can better respond to the needs of communities.

Speaking on behalf of Small Bo chiefdom, the Chiefdom Speaker Ishmeal Koroma reaffirmed their commitment to community service and praised the Attorney General for engaging directly with local authorities, describing the initiative as unprecedented.
