Guma Building,Freetown, Sierra Leone – 18 March 2025 – The Deputy Minister of Justice, Madam Spatieu Elizabeth Saccoh, held a productive meeting today with Telem Uncommon Sounds, led by Kate Krontiris, and a team from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The meeting, which focused on enhancing Sierra Leone’s music economy, marks a significant step towards fostering the growth of the local music industry.
Telem, in collaboration with MIT’s Sloan School of Management, is spearheading a project aimed at invigorating Sierra Leone’s music sector. The project seeks to increase the vibrancy of the country’s music economy, a key component of Sierra Leone’s cultural and economic development. One of the primary discussions centered on the crucial issue of intellectual property and music rights management.

The meeting served as a platform for a deeper exploration of policies and strategies that would ensure local musicians benefit from their work while contributing to Sierra Leone’s growing cultural and creative economy. With strong collaboration between the government, local and international partners, and key stakeholders, this project promises to have a positive and long-lasting impact on the development of Sierra Leone’s music sector.
Sierra Leone’s government remains committed to promoting the cultural industry, as it continues to work closely with global partners to create a sustainable, dynamic, and thriving music ecosystem.
In addition to the Deputy Minister, other notable attendees included Osman I. Kanu Esq., Director of Public Prosecutions, Ms. Martina Egbenda, Administrator and Registrar General and her team, as well as a representative from the Ministry of Trade. Other State Counsel from the OAGMOJ were also present.
The presence of stakeholders from other institutions highlight the multi-sectoral approach being taken to address the challenges and opportunities in the music industry.
