Deputy Minister of Justice, Madam Saptieu Elizabeth Saccoh leads engagements in parliament for the enactment of the Counter Terrorism Act 2024

The Deputy Minister of Justice, Madam Saptieu Elizabeth Saccoh has led engagements in parliament for the enactment of the Counter Terrorism Act 2024. Following thorough review and amendements, the bill was unanimously approved by both the ruling and opposition members of parliament as it now awaits presidential assent so as for it to become law.

Once signed into law the counter Terrorism Act will provide for offenses of terrorism and terrorism related matters, enforcement measures on terrorist funds and other assets, prohibition of financial support to terrorism and other related matters of national security.

In order to use the new law to strengthen and not undermine fundamental human rights.

The office of the Attorney General and Minister of Justice together with both ruling and opposition members of parliament has agreed to include exclusions provided for in the Africa Union Model Anti- Terrorism law into the definition of terrorist acts and terrorism offenses.

The Deputy Minister of Justice Madam Saptieu Elizabeth Saccoh whilst moving the motion for the final approval of bill expressed her satisfaction with the outcome of the process, highlighting the importance of the law in fortifying Sierra Leone’s position in the fight against Terrorism.
